Nigeria’s Stallions made a winning start to their campaign at the 2026 Africa Men’s Sevens Series in Kampala, Uganda, defeating Ghana’s Black Eagles 26-5 in their opening fixture.
The result gave Nigeria an early boost in the competition, which also served as the African qualification tournament for the 2027 World Rugby HSBC SVNS 3.
Nigeria was drawn in Pool A alongside Zimbabwe, Ghana and Morocco, with the team needing a strong group-stage performance to progress to the latter stages of the competition.
The Stallions, however, struggled to maintain their momentum after the opening victory. They suffered a heavy 36-5 defeat to Morocco before losing 26-14 to Zimbabwe in their final pool match.
The results meant Nigeria missed out on the semi-finals and moved into the placement matches.
The Stallions responded with a narrow 25-22 victory over Senegal, setting up a fifth-place playoff against Tunisia. Nigeria eventually lost that match 19-7 to finish sixth overall.
Zimbabwe went on to claim the title after defeating hosts Uganda 26-19 in the final, securing Africa’s promotion place to the 2027 SVNS 3.
Despite finishing sixth, Nigeria recorded two victories from five matches, including the opening win over Ghana and the subsequent victory against Senegal.
The campaign provides another competitive test for Nigeria’s developing men’s Sevens programme as the Stallions continue their pursuit of a stronger presence on the African and international rugby stage.
