Dr Mustapha Abdullahi has emerged as the new President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) following its elective congress in Abuja on Thursday, October 15.
Abdullahi will lead the federation for the 2026–2030 term, succeeding Engineer Ahmadu Musa Kida.
Ugo Udezue has also emerged as the federation’s new Vice President after running unopposed for the position.
The new leadership faces expectations from stakeholders who want better grassroots development, stronger domestic competitions, improved infrastructure, better player welfare and increased commercial investment in Nigerian basketball.
Before the election, Abdullahi outlined a seven-point agenda to improve the sport. His plans include strengthening basketball administration, improving domestic leagues, nurturing young talents, upgrading facilities and building a sustainable financial structure for the federation.
He also proposed a 100-day action plan. The plan includes auditing the federation’s finances and programmes, organising a national stakeholders’ summit, introducing a unified competition calendar and improving digital registration and statistics systems.
Abdullahi must now translate these promises into practical results across the country.
His administration will also oversee preparations for Nigeria’s national teams, including D’Tigers and D’Tigress, while working to create clearer pathways for emerging players.
Meanwhile, the election has attracted legal scrutiny. A substantive court case reportedly challenges aspects of the electoral process, raising questions about the dispute’s potential implications for the new administration.
The election marks a new chapter for Nigerian basketball. Stakeholders will now look to Abdullahi and Udezue to deliver reforms, strengthen domestic competitions and create more opportunities for players, coaches and officials.
Their performance over the next four years will shape the federation’s direction and influence the future of basketball in Nigeria.
