Morocco Secure Last-32 Place
Morocco came from behind twice to defeat Haiti 4-2 in an entertaining World Cup match in Atlanta on Wednesday.
The Atlas Lions secured second place in Group C. However, they missed out on top spot as Brazil finished ahead on goal difference.
Morocco will now travel to Monterrey for a last-32 clash, where they are likely to face either the Netherlands or Japan.
Haiti Score Historic World Cup Goals
Haiti entered the match already eliminated from the tournament. Nevertheless, they produced a spirited display and scored their first World Cup goals since 1974.
The Caribbean side took the lead after just 10 minutes. Jean-Kevin Duverne reached the byline and delivered a cross that Lenny Joseph turned toward goal.
The ball deflected off goalkeeper Yassine Bounou and went into the net for an own goal.
Thousands of Haitian supporters in Atlanta celebrated loudly as their team continued to attack with confidence.
Hakimi Leads Morocco’s Response
Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi played a key role throughout the match. The right-back regularly pushed forward and created several chances.
The equalizer arrived in the 39th minute. Goalkeeper Jonny Placide saved Bilal El Khannouss’ effort, but Hakimi reacted quickly to score from close range.
However, Haiti regained the lead only four minutes later.
Wilson Isidor collected a loose ball outside the penalty area and struck a powerful shot into the top corner. The goal stunned Morocco and restored Haiti’s advantage.
Morocco Fight Back Before Half-Time
Morocco responded strongly before the break.
Ismael Saibari continued his excellent tournament by scoring his third goal in three matches. He finished calmly after receiving a low cross from Hakimi.
Shortly before halftime, Brahim Diaz nearly gave Morocco the lead, but his curling effort narrowly missed the post.
As a result, the teams went into the break level at 2-2 after an exciting first half.
Rahimi and Yassine Seal Victory
Knowing that Brazil were beating Scotland, Morocco needed a big win to finish top of the group.
Coach Mohamed Ouahbi made several substitutions during the second half as he looked ahead to the knockout stage.
The changes proved effective.
Soufiane Rahimi scored the winning goal when his powerful effort from a corner took a deflection and flew into the top corner.
Soon afterward, Rahimi won possession near the byline and delivered a cross for Gessime Yassine, who finished into an empty net.
Haiti Exit With Pride
Although Haiti finished the tournament without a point, their performances earned widespread praise.
The team competed bravely against Scotland, Brazil and Morocco during their first World Cup appearance since 1974.
Meanwhile, Morocco advance to the last 32 with confidence after collecting seven points from three matches. However, Brazil claimed first place in Group C on goal difference.
