Afrobeats star Davido has sparked fresh debate after paying tribute to victims of the Oyo schoolchildren kidnapping during a performance in the United States.

The singer wore a custom made jacket at the FIFA World Cup 2026 Countdown Concert in Los Angeles on June 10. The outfit displayed the names of victims linked to the May 15 attack on three schools in Oyo State.

Gunmen attacked the schools and killed two educators during the incident. They also abducted several children, including toddlers as young as two years old. The attack shocked many Nigerians and renewed concerns about insecurity across the country.

Davido’s tribute drew mixed reactions online. Many fans praised him for using his global platform to draw attention to the victims and their families. Others questioned whether the gesture projected Nigeria in a negative light.

Hausa singer Dauda Kahutu Rarara strongly criticised the performance. He described Davido’s decision as “barbaric” and accused the Afrobeats star of embarrassing Nigeria before an international audience.

Rarara also claimed the tribute could encourage kidnappers by giving them global attention. His comments quickly circulated across social media and triggered heated reactions.

Davido fired back at the singer. He dismissed Rarara’s criticism and described him as “illiterate” in a social media response.

The exchange has divided supporters of both entertainers. It has also fueled tribal arguments online, with many users debating whether celebrities should speak openly about Nigeria’s security challenges.

The Oyo school attack remains one of several kidnapping incidents reported across Nigeria in recent months. Families of many victims continue to wait for updates as security agencies work to secure their release.

The public disagreement between Davido and Rarara has once again highlighted the country’s growing insecurity. It has also reignited debate over the role of public figures in drawing attention to national tragedies.
