The Kano State Hisbah Board has announced that Christians interested in the state-sponsored mass wedding programme are eligible to participate, saying the initiative is open to people of different faiths.

The Deputy Commander-General of the Board, Sheikh Mujahideen Aminuddeen, disclosed that the programme is not restricted to Muslims alone, adding that Christian couples took part in the previous edition of the exercise.

According to him, three Christian couples participated in the last mass wedding held in October 2023, while preparations are ongoing for another edition of the programme. He, however, said the board could not confirm the number of Christian couples currently interested in the upcoming exercise. (Vanguard News)

The mass wedding initiative, organised by the Kano State Government through the Hisbah Board, is aimed at supporting less privileged individuals who wish to get married and reducing the financial burden associated with wedding ceremonies.

Previous editions of the programme have attracted thousands of applicants, with the government providing support such as wedding materials, empowerment assistance and other forms of assistance for beneficiaries.

The Hisbah Board said prospective couples are subjected to screening processes, including medical checks, before final selection for participation.

The announcement has highlighted the board’s position that the programme is designed as a social intervention scheme that accommodates qualified participants regardless of religious background.
