The Federal Capital Territory Resident Electoral Commissioner, Malam Aminu Kasimu Idris, has commended the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) for organising a Media and Information Literacy training for staff of INEC FCT.
The REC gave the commendation during a two-day capacity-building workshop for selected INEC FCT personnel. He was represented at the event by the Administrative Secretary, Mrs Bimbo Oladunjoye.
According to Idris, strengthening electoral integrity through media literacy has become increasingly important due to the growing impact of misinformation and disinformation on election credibility and public trust.

He explained that the training will help staff identify manipulated digital content such as deepfakes. In addition, it will improve the Commission’s ability to communicate timely and accurate information to the public.
Furthermore, the REC reaffirmed INEC FCT’s commitment to protecting the information ecosystem. He noted that the Commission will continue to engage responsibly with the media and key stakeholders, especially as preparations intensify for the upcoming Area Council elections.
Meanwhile, Idris encouraged participants to actively engage in the sessions, share experiences and apply the knowledge gained to improve public communication and election management.
He also thanked CJID for its continued partnership and support in strengthening democratic processes.
Organisers said the two-day workshop was designed to equip INEC FCT staff with practical skills to manage digital information challenges. The training is expected to support efforts to deliver a peaceful, credible and secure Area Council election scheduled for February 21, 2026.
