The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has formally appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to postpone the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026, citing the overlap with the Ramadan fasting period.

The party made the request in a letter dated January 22, 2026, jointly signed by its National Chairman, Senator David A. B. Mark, and National Secretary, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.

According to the ADC, the election date coincides with the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, a period of fasting and spiritual observance by a significant portion of the FCT electorate, which could affect voter turnout and participation.

In the letter addressed to INEC, the party stated that the request was made in the interest of promoting broad-based participation in the democratic process and ensuring that eligible voters are not disadvantaged due to religious obligations.

The ADC urged the electoral commission to consider shifting the election to a date after Ramadan, stressing that such a move would strengthen inclusivity and enhance electoral legitimacy.

The party further noted that its engagement with INEC was guided by institutional procedures and respect for electoral laws, requesting guidance on the formal processes required to submit an official application in line with the Electoral Act, the Constitution, and INEC regulations.

In a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC reaffirmed its commitment to democratic participation and sensitivity to Nigeria’s diverse social and religious landscape.

The party emphasized that electoral credibility is strengthened when voting arrangements accommodate the realities of citizens and encourage maximum participation across religious and cultural lines.

INEC has yet to issue an official response to the request.
