Mrs. Safiyyah Hassan Shaibu has assumed office as the 25th President of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), succeeding Mrs. Mernan Femi Oluyede, following a formal handing-over ceremony held on Saturday at the NAOWA National Secretariat, Asokoro, Abuja.
The event marked the official transition of leadership within the association, attended by senior military officers’ wives, NAOWA executives, and other dignitaries.
In her farewell remarks, outgoing President Mrs. Oluyede expressed gratitude to God and her husband, General OO Oluyede AFM NAM, for their support throughout her tenure. She highlighted key achievements under her administration, including strengthened institutional frameworks, sustainable empowerment programmes, and humanitarian interventions across army formations nationwide.
Mrs. Oluyede, who now serves as President of the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA), urged continued unity and commitment to NAOWA’s mission of service and support to military families.
In her acceptance speech, Mrs. Shaibu commended her predecessor for her outstanding leadership and pledged to consolidate on the association’s achievements. She reaffirmed her commitment to advancing the welfare and empowerment of Nigerian Army families.
“Mrs. Oluyede’s leadership has been inspiring, and I intend to build on her legacy with sincerity, vision, and dedication,” she said.

A Chartered Accountant and Chartered Forensic Accountant currently pursuing a PhD in Public Administration, Mrs. Shaibu previously held various NAOWA leadership roles in Monguno, Bama, and Maiduguri, where she led infrastructural and humanitarian projects.
Her emergence as the new president is expected to further strengthen NAOWA’s impact in supporting military families and promoting unity, service, and empowerment across its chapters nationwide.
