Brazilian football legend Ronaldo Nazário has publicly called on national team coach Carlo Ancelotti to ensure Neymar Jr. is included in Brazil’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite ongoing debates over Neymar’s fitness and form.

Speaking in Rio on Tuesday during a charity event, the two-time World Cup winner and former Ballon d’Or star described Neymar as “irreplaceable” and a player whose presence could inspire Brazil’s quest for a record-extending sixth world title.

“There is no player like Neymar,” Ronaldo said. “His talent, creativity, and experience make him a weapon Brazil cannot afford to leave out. Even if he is not at 100%, Neymar on the pitch is better than many players at their best.”

The comments come at a critical time for Neymar, who has faced a series of injuries since joining Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia. While he has returned to training, doubts remain over his long-term fitness heading into the World Cup in North America next summer.

Carlo Ancelotti, who took over as Brazil’s head coach earlier this year, has emphasized youth and discipline in his team selection. Rising stars like Endrick, Rodrygo, and Vinícius Júnior have impressed in recent qualifiers, raising questions about whether Neymar still fits into Brazil’s evolving style of play.

Ancelotti has so far been cautious, saying: “Neymar is a great player, but every decision will be based on form, fitness, and what’s best for the team. The World Cup is about collective strength.”

Ronaldo’s plea reflects a wider debate among fans, pundits, and former players. While many Brazilians still see Neymar as the team’s talisman, others argue that his time at the top level is over.

Football analyst Juliana Carvalho told S24 Sports: “Neymar represents brilliance but also fragility. The question is whether Ancelotti is willing to gamble on him in a tournament where mistakes are unforgiving.”

Social media has also been buzzing, with hashtags like #NeymarNoMundial (Neymar in the World Cup) trending in Brazil. Some fans insist he deserves a “last dance,” while others argue Brazil should fully embrace its next generation.

Neymar, who has been relatively quiet about his World Cup ambitions, recently told reporters: “I still dream of playing another World Cup. If my body allows, I will give everything for Brazil. Wearing the yellow shirt is the greatest honor of my life.”

The 33-year-old forward has 128 caps and 79 international goals, making him Brazil’s all-time leading scorer ahead of Pelé. His experience and star power remain unmatched, even as his career faces uncertainty.

With less than a year to the 2026 World Cup, Ancelotti is expected to announce Brazil’s preliminary squad by March. Whether Neymar makes the cut could be one of the most closely watched decisions in world football.

For Ronaldo, the verdict is already clear: “Neymar must be there. He gives Brazil something unique  magic, courage, and the ability to decide a game in a single moment. Players like him don’t come twice.”
