The race will mark Formula 1’s first appearance on the continent since the 1993 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami, ending a decades-long absence from African soil.
Organisers plan to build a purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, southeast of Rwanda’s capital, Kigali, although Formula 1 has yet to announce an exact date for the inaugural race.
The announcement marks a major development for African motorsport and reflects Formula 1’s efforts to expand its global reach while connecting with new audiences across the continent.
Rwanda expects the event to attract international visitors, boost tourism and create economic opportunities, while raising the country’s profile as a destination for major sporting events.
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has also advocated for Formula 1’s return to Africa, repeatedly highlighting the continent’s importance to the sport’s global future.
The agreement could open a new chapter for African motorsport, bringing the continent back onto the Formula 1 calendar and giving fans another opportunity to experience the championship on home soil.
Formula 1 will announce further details about the circuit’s construction and the inaugural race date as preparations progress.
