The Nigerian Senate has called on the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue Nigerians still held by kidnappers and strengthen protection for communities facing security threats across the country.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the call as the upper chamber resumed legislative activities, stressing that lawmakers would use legislation, appropriation and oversight to support efforts against insecurity, flooding and the rising cost of living.
Akpabio urged security agencies to sustain and strengthen operations aimed at securing the release of abducted Nigerians while improving protection for vulnerable communities.
The Senate had previously called for intensified military and intelligence operations against terrorists, kidnappers, bandits and other criminal groups, alongside improved equipment, surveillance, intelligence capabilities, logistics and welfare for security personnel.
The upper chamber has also taken up security-related issues through its oversight activities, including an expanded investigation into the funding and implementation of the Safe School Initiative and other education and humanitarian interventions linked to the safety of students.
Akpabio said the Senate would review existing measures and consider additional legislative, budgetary and oversight interventions as part of efforts to address the country’s security challenges.
The call comes amid continued concerns over abductions and displacement in several parts of the country, with lawmakers maintaining that protecting citizens and communities requires sustained coordination between the legislature, the executive and security agencies.
