A Kano High Court has sentenced 19 year old bride Aisha Jibrin to death by hanging after finding her guilty of killing her husband. The judgment has also reignited conversations about early marriage and age gaps in Nigeria.
Justice Maryam Sabo delivered the ruling on July 30. According to the court, prosecutors proved beyond reasonable doubt that Jibrin poisoned her husband’s Zobo drink before stabbing him on May 5, 2025, in Farawa Quarters, Kano.
The court convicted Jibrin of culpable homicide under Section 221(a) of the Penal Code. Justice Sabo sentenced her to death by hanging. However, Jibrin still has 90 days to appeal the judgment.
During the hearing, Jibrin’s lawyer pleaded for leniency. He told the court that she had transformed during her time in custody. He said she had memorised the Qur’an and positively influenced other inmates. As the family’s eldest child, she also supports her younger siblings, he added.
News of the judgment quickly spread across social media. However, the couple’s wedding photos have attracted just as much attention. Many users say the images have shifted the conversation beyond the courtroom.
Some Nigerians questioned whether young people are emotionally ready for marriage. Others pointed to the apparent age gap between the couple. They argued that large age differences and early marriages can create serious challenges.
Not everyone agrees with that view. Some users warned against blaming every young marriage for one person’s actions. They insisted that people should judge the crime on its own facts.
Beyond the court ruling, the case has reopened conversations about emotional maturity, family expectations and the pressures young couples face. Many people also believe stronger support systems could help newly married couples navigate difficult situations.
