Gombe State University Student Receives Most Outstanding Debater AwardGombe State University Student Receives Most Outstanding Debater Award
A student of Gombe State University, Alewa Jonathan David, has emerged as the Most Outstanding Debater at the Amnesty International Human Rights Debate Competition held in Abuja.
Jonathan, a 500-level student of the Faculty of Law, was recognised for his exceptional performance, eloquence, critical thinking, and strong advocacy for human rights during the national competition, which featured participants from universities across Nigeria.
Although the Gombe State University debate team was eliminated at the quarter-final stage following a closely contested debate against Madonna University Nigeria, Jonathan’s outstanding individual performance earned him the competition’s highest individual award.
Receiving the honour, Jonathan was congratulated by the Vice-Chancellor of Gombe State University, who described the achievement as a reflection of the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and student development.
The Vice-Chancellor encouraged the award-winning debater to sustain his pursuit of excellence and urged him to mentor and inspire other students interested in debate and public speaking, stressing the importance of preparing more students to compete successfully at national and international levels.
He also commended the university’s debate team and praised their coach, Mr. Hadu Naphtali Ligari, for his dedication and mentorship, which have contributed significantly to the team’s achievements.
In recognition of their participation and contribution to the competition, Amnesty International presented Certificates of Recognition to both Gombe State University and Mr. Ligari.
The latest achievement adds to Gombe State University’s growing reputation for producing students who demonstrate leadership, intellectual capacity, and the ability to represent the institution on national and global platforms.
