A 23-year-old nursing student of the College of Nursing Sciences, Alor, in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, has been found dead in her apartment under circumstances suspected to be linked to foul play.
The deceased, identified as Chiamaka Chilaka, was an ND II student of the institution and a native of Isingu in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State. Her lifeless body was discovered in her residence at Uruezeani, Alor, on Sunday after church service.
The tragic incident has sparked outrage, particularly after a viral video surfaced online showing a visibly distraught cleric mourning the young student. In the emotional clip, the cleric repeatedly cried, “My daughter, my daughter,” while lamenting her untimely death.
Social media users have also circulated unverified claims alleging that Chilaka had repeatedly rejected alleged sexual advances from her landlord. According to the accounts, she was last seen in a heated argument with him before she was found dead. However, the police have yet to confirm these allegations.
Confirming the incident on Thursday, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed that the landlord has been arrested and is assisting investigators.
Ikenga said the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, ordered an immediate and thorough investigation after the case was transferred from the Nnobi Divisional Police Headquarters to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka.
According to the police, detectives who visited the scene observed several injuries on the victim’s body, including a deep cut on her thigh, multiple signs of violence and blood stains, raising strong suspicions of homicide.
“The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has directed investigative officers to expedite action on the investigation into the reported suspected murder of a 23-year-old female student, whose lifeless body was discovered at her residence in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State,” the statement read.

Ikenga further disclosed that the victim’s body has been deposited in a mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
“Meanwhile, the landlord of the premises has been taken into custody and is currently undergoing interrogation as part of ongoing investigations,” he said.
The police assured the public that a thorough investigation was underway and vowed to ensure that anyone found responsible for the student’s death would be prosecuted.
