Ivory Coast striker Elye Wahi will miss his country’s World Cup match against Germany after Canadian authorities denied his entry request.

The Ivorian Football Federation confirmed the development on Thursday. Officials said Wahi could not travel to Toronto because he did not receive the required authorization to enter Canada.

As a result, he will stay in the United States while his teammates prepare for Saturday’s Group E clash.

Wahi’s absence comes as French authorities continue to investigate allegations linked to suspicious betting activity.

Reports say investigators are examining claims that the forward deliberately sought a yellow card during a Ligue 1 match between Nice and Metz in May.

Police questioned the 23-year-old player earlier this year. However, authorities have not filed any charges against him.

The timing could not be worse for Ivory Coast.

The Elephants opened their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 victory over Ecuador. Germany also started strongly with a dominant win over Curacao.

Saturday’s match could play a major role in deciding which teams advance from Group E.

Despite the travel setback, the Ivorian Football Federation has expressed support for Wahi.

Officials said he remains an important member of the national team. They also pledged to continue assisting him during the ongoing situation.

Ivory Coast must now prepare for one of its biggest group-stage matches without one of its attacking options.

Fans will hope the team can overcome the setback and maintain its strong start to the tournament.
