The Nigerian Navy has handed over a suspected militant collaborator to the Department of State Services (DSS) in Cross River State as part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating within the Calabar waterways.
The suspect, identified as Ubong Clement, was arrested by personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) VICTORY deployed at the Forward Security Outpost on Dayspring Island in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of the state.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the arrest followed sustained intelligence-led operations targeting militancy and other criminal activities in the area.
Preliminary investigations reportedly revealed that the suspect maintained regular contact with members of militant groups operating around the Dayspring Island axis and engaged in activities that compromised ongoing security operations.
The Navy also alleged that Clement had links to a notorious militant identified as Steven Joseph, popularly known as “Juju”, who has been associated with criminal activities within the waterways.
Investigators further discovered that the suspect allegedly served as a channel for disposing of goods stolen from market boats intercepted by militants. Proceeds from the sales were reportedly remitted to the militant group, providing financial and logistical support for its operations.
Following preliminary investigations, the suspect was handed over to the DSS, Calabar Command, for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Navy said the development highlights its resolve not only to apprehend those directly involved in militancy but also to dismantle the support networks that sustain criminal activities within the maritime domain.
It reiterated its commitment to intelligence-driven operations, community engagement and targeted security actions aimed at ensuring lasting peace and security in the Calabar waterways and surrounding communities.
