Mexico Make Strong Start

Mexico began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a 2-0 win over South Africa on Thursday. The Group A match took place at the famous Estadio Azteca in front of more than 80,000 fans.

The co-hosts controlled much of the game and earned a deserved victory. South Africa struggled to cope with the pressure and ended the match with only nine players.

Quinones Scores First Goal of Tournament

Julian Quinones scored the first goal of the 2026 World Cup in the ninth minute. The forward took advantage of a defensive mistake and fired a low shot past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

The goal sparked huge celebrations inside the stadium. Fans created a loud atmosphere as Mexico pushed forward in search of more goals.

South Africa appeared nervous from the start. The visitors found it difficult to keep possession and deal with Mexico’s attacking play.

Red Card Changes the Match

South Africa’s problems increased early in the second half. Midfielder Sphephelo Sithole received a straight red card in the 49th minute.

Sithole brought down Brian Gutierrez as the Mexican attacker raced towards goal. The referee immediately showed the red card.

The dismissal left South Africa with 10 men and made Mexico’s task easier.

Jimenez Seals Victory

Mexico doubled their lead in the 67th minute. Roberto Alvarado delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area.

Veteran striker Raul Jimenez met the ball with a powerful header. His goal gave Mexico full control of the contest.

The home side continued to create chances while South Africa struggled to respond.

More Late Drama

The match produced more controversy in the closing stages. South Africa captain Themba Zwane received a red card after a VAR review in the 84th minute.

Officials ruled that Zwane struck Alvarado in the face during an off-the-ball incident. The decision reduced South Africa to nine men.

Mexico also lost a player before full-time. Defender Cesar Montes received a red card for a late challenge on Khulisa Mudau.

Perfect Start for Hosts

Despite the late incidents, Mexico comfortably secured all three points. The victory gives the hosts an excellent start in Group A.

South Africa, meanwhile, face an uphill task in their remaining matches. They will need a strong response to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.
