Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving N68 billion in operational support for the Maiduguri Emergency Power Plant (MEPP).

The governor described the intervention as timely, noting that it would help sustain electricity supply and address existing funding gaps in the plant’s operations. The approval covers a monthly intervention of N2 billion from March 2026 to December 2028.

According to Zulum, the power plant was established in 2021 as a presidential intervention following prolonged outages caused by insurgents who vandalised critical electricity infrastructure, leaving the state without power for nearly two years.

He noted that the plant, which has since been upgraded to a 50-megawatt capacity, has significantly revived economic activities, created jobs, and supported small and medium enterprises across Borno State.

Zulum further stated that improved electricity supply has strengthened security by enhancing livelihoods and reducing vulnerabilities associated with insurgency and criminal activities.

The governor added that the federal government’s continued support would ensure sustainable power supply to Maiduguri and surrounding communities, while reinforcing efforts toward long-term stability and development in the state.
