The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed claims circulating on social media regarding a purported X (formerly Twitter) post involving its Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, explaining that the situation stems from efforts to prevent misinformation and external interference in its communications.

In a statement, the commission clarified that the alleged post being shared online is fake and not linked to any official or personal account operated by the INEC chairman. It added that Amupitan does not maintain a personal X account and has consistently channelled all official communications through verified institutional platforms to maintain transparency and avoid manipulation.

INEC further explained that its recent actions are part of broader measures to protect the integrity of its leadership and prevent cyber-related misinformation that could undermine public trust in the electoral process. The commission warned against the spread of unverified content, noting that such actions are capable of misleading the public and disrupting confidence in the electoral body.

It reaffirmed its commitment to credible communication and urged Nigerians to rely strictly on official INEC channels for authentic updates, especially as the country approaches key electoral activities.
