Pope Leo has called for a fairer distribution of Africa’s natural resources, warning that inequality and exploitation continue to undermine the continent’s development.
Speaking in Angola on Monday, the pontiff said the hopes of many citizens are being eroded by systemic injustice and abuse of power. “We can see today how the hope of many people is frustrated by violence, exploited by the powerful and defrauded by the rich,” he stated.
The pope further cautioned against the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few, noting that such imbalance fuels social instability. “When injustice corrupts hearts, the bread of all becomes the possession of a few,” he added.
His remarks come amid ongoing global discussions on resource control, governance, and equitable economic systems across Africa, where vast natural wealth often contrasts sharply with widespread poverty.
Pope Leo is expected to continue his diplomatic and pastoral engagements with a visit to Equatorial Guinea on Tuesday, marking the final leg of his 11-day tour of the continent.
Observers say the pope’s message reinforces longstanding calls for accountability, transparency, and inclusive growth in Africa’s resource management.
