The United Nations, UN, have urged Israel to immediately and unconditionally release two activists detained from a Gaza-bound flotilla.
UN rights office spokesman Thameen Al-Kheetan made the call in a statement, said the activists, Saif Abukeshek and Thiago de Avila, were detained in international waters and transferred to Israel.
The UN also raised concerns about alleged mistreatment, described reports of abuse as “disturbing” and called for a full investigation.
The organisation stressed that international law protects individuals detained at sea and requires due process.
The UN asking Israel to release Gaza flotilla activists stance reflects broader concerns about human rights in the region.
The flotilla aimed to draw attention to conditions in Gaza Strip, which has faced prolonged conflict and restrictions.
Human rights groups have also urged transparency in the case, ask authorities to clarify the legal basis for the detention and also demand access to legal representation and medical care for the detainees.
The situation adds to ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Analysts say incidents at sea can escalate diplomatic disputes. They warn that failure to address such issues could worsen regional instability.
The UN call highlights the importance of accountability for human rights and respect first international law.
