The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has launched an investigation into an alleged data breach involving Remita Payment Services Limited, Sterling Bank, and other entities.
According to a press release dated April 5, 2026, the Commission has already served a formal notice of investigation on the affected parties.
However, the goal is to ensure that data protection standards are upheld in line with Nigeria’s legal framework.

The Commission’s National Commissioner/CEO, Vincent Olatunji, has directed that organisations using digital payment systems without adequate safeguards will also come under scrutiny.
Emphasizing the move is part of broader efforts to enforce compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.
NDPC also said the importance of implementing proper technical and organisational measures to protect personal data.
The investigation also aims to reinforce trust and integrity within Nigeria’s growing digital and fintech ecosystem.
