A Federal High Court in Kaduna State has adjourned the bail hearing of former governor Nasir El-Rufai to March 31, 2026. The court reached this decision after hearing arguments from both the defense and prosecution on Tuesday.

During the session, El-Rufai’s lawyer, Ukpon Akpan, urged the court to grant bail. He argued that the law guarantees his client’s constitutional rights and added that bail would give the former governor enough time to prepare his defense. As a result, the defense maintained that the court should release him pending trial.

However, the prosecution opposed the request and stressed that the charges remain serious. It also warned that granting bail could interfere with ongoing investigations. Consequently, the court decided to adjourn the matter to review all arguments carefully.

The Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) arraigned El-Rufai over allegations of financial misconduct, abuse of office, and money laundering. The Commission filed the case under suit number FHC/KD/73/2026 and accused him of converting and possessing public property during his time in office.

Meanwhile, security agencies increased their presence around the court ahead of the arraignment. Armed personnel guarded key entry points to maintain order as supporters gathered outside the premises. However, officials did not allow journalists into the courtroom to observe proceedings.

In addition, the ICPC arraigned El-Rufai alongside Joel Adoga before the Federal High Court. At the same time, the Commission filed another case against him and Amadu Sule at the Kaduna State High Court. This separate case includes allegations of fraud, abuse of office, intent to commit fraud, and conferring undue advantage.

According to the ICPC, it filed both cases on March 18, 2026, as part of its ongoing efforts to enforce accountability. While proceedings continue at the Federal High Court, the State High Court will announce its hearing date later.

For now, the court will rule on El-Rufai’s bail application on March 31, 2026. Until then, legal arguments remain under review while investigations continue, keeping public attention fixed on the case.
