NFF Begins Preparations for 2026 Electoral Process in Yenagoa

The Nigeria Football Federation has officially kicked off preparations for its 2026 elections with an Extraordinary General Assembly holding in Yenagoa.

The meeting is expected to lay the foundation for the federation’s next leadership cycle by setting up key electoral structures.

During the assembly, the NFF will appoint members of the Electoral Committee and the Electoral Appeals Committee.

In addition, delegates will select an Independent Auditor to oversee governance and ensure compliance with established regulations.

These steps are crucial to guaranteeing a transparent and credible election process.

Representatives from FIFA and Confederation of African Football are already in Nigeria to observe proceedings.

Their presence is aimed at ensuring that the electoral process aligns with international best practices and standards.

The NFF conducts elections every four years during its Annual General Assembly.

The next election is scheduled to take place at the 82nd Annual General Assembly in September 2026, with the host city yet to be announced.

Current NFF President Ibrahim Gusau was elected on September 30, 2022, during the 78th General Assembly in Benin City.

The Yenagoa gathering will bring together, Chairmen and secretaries of all 36 state football associations and the FCT, Members of the NFF Executive Committee, League officials and management staff and Representatives of Coaches, Referees, and Players’ Associations

Governor Douye Diri is expected to declare the event open at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall.

Top government and sports officials, including Shehu Dikko, Bukola Olopade, Abdul Ningi, and Kabiru Amadu, are also scheduled to attend.

Beyond committee appointments, the assembly will review proposed amendments to, NFF Statutes, Electoral Code and Standing Orders of the General Assembly with Gusau expected to deliver a welcome address before deliberations begin.

The Extraordinary General Assembly marks a critical first step toward the 2026 NFF elections.

By establishing electoral bodies and updating governing rules, the federation aims to ensure a free, fair, and credible leadership transition.
