The Nigerian Senate has approved the appointment of Magnus Abe as Chairman of the Board of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

Abe, who previously represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District, was confirmed after a screening exercise conducted by lawmakers in Abuja.

The screening was carried out by the Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream), chaired by Eteng Jonah Williams.

Abe was among nominees submitted by Bola Tinubu for leadership roles within the commission.

Following Senate tradition, Abe was asked to “take a bow and go” in recognition of his previous service as a two-term lawmaker.

Abe is known to be a political ally of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

His appointment is seen as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen leadership within Nigeria’s upstream petroleum regulatory framework.

Speaking after his confirmation, Abe addressed the impact of rising global oil prices triggered by tensions involving Iran and the United States.

He described the situation as a global crisis rather than a problem unique to Nigeria.

According to him, while higher fuel prices may create economic pressure locally, increased crude oil prices could boost Nigeria’s revenue.

Rising Oil Prices: Challenge And Opportunity

Abe noted that the surge in oil prices presents a balancing effect for Nigeria’s economy.

Higher prices may:

  • Increase government earnings from crude exports
  • Enable investment in marginal oil fields
  • Support expansion in gas production

He added that disruptions in global gas supply could create opportunities for Nigeria to strengthen its position in the energy market.

Call For Global Stability

The former lawmaker also called for an end to the ongoing global conflict, stressing that beyond economic concerns, lives are being lost.

He urged collective efforts toward peace, noting that stability is crucial for both global energy markets and economic growth.
