Signing the Electoral Act Was Unavoidable- Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu says he had no option but to sign the amended Electoral Act after lawmakers passed it in the National Assembly of Nigeria.

The president said the decision reflects his commitment to democracy and the rule of law.

Speaking on the issue, Tinubu described himself as a “diehard democrat.” He said he strongly believes in the supremacy of democratic institutions.

“I am a diehard democrat, and I follow that belief wholeheartedly,” Tinubu said.

“The rule of law must prevail in any democracy. The majority will have their say and way, while the minority will have their say but may not have their way.”

Tinubu said the lawmaking process reflects the core values of democracy. He explained that elected representatives make decisions based on the will of the majority.

The Electoral Act regulates how Nigeria conducts elections.

Lawmakers in the National Assembly passed the bill and sent it to the president for assent, in accordance with constitutional rules.

Tinubu made the remarks amid public debate over the law and its impact on Nigeria’s electoral process.

The president added that respecting parliamentary decisions will strengthen democratic governance and build stable institutions in the country.
