The Customs Officers’ Wives Association has expanded its climate action programme through the Green Barracks Campaign.

The initiative aims to promote cleaner and more sustainable barracks communities across Nigeria.

The campaign featured a one-day environmental education workshop and tree-planting exercise in Ikeja.

The programme was organised by the COWA Federal Operations Unit Zone ‘A’.

Representing the National President of COWA, Mrs. Kikelomo Adeniyi, the Chairperson of COWA FOU Zone ‘A’, Clara Aliyu, said the campaign aligns with national environmental priorities.

She added that the initiative positions COWA as a partner in sustainability and environmental protection.

Aliyu outlined several programmes under the Green Barracks campaign.

They include Monthly Clean Barracks Day and a tree-planting target across Customs communities.

Additionally, the campaign will introduce youth eco-clubs and pilot waste separation initiatives.

COWA also plans to partner with local waste management agencies.

Meanwhile, the Comptroller of FOU Zone ‘A’, Gambo Aliyu, said the initiative aligns with the mandate of the Nigeria Customs Service.

He noted that Customs officers play an important role in enforcing environmental regulations at Nigeria’s borders.

Additionally, the Service works to prevent illegal trade in hazardous goods.

Aliyu urged participants to adopt environmentally responsible practices in their daily activities.

He also encouraged Customs personnel to champion green initiatives within their communities.

The guest lecturer, Juliet Eya, encouraged participants to support global environmental sustainability efforts.

She urged them to remain conscious of their surroundings and adopt eco-friendly practices.

The workshop ended with a symbolic tree-planting exercise.

Organisers said the activity reflects COWA’s commitment to building a carbon-responsible future.
