White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has accused Democrats of causing the shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Speaking to reporters, Leavitt said the shutdown would leave thousands of federal workers without pay.
She noted that personnel of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the United States Coast Guard, and the Transportation Security Administration would be forced to continue working despite not receiving salaries.

Leavitt added that the situation would affect workers who ensure disaster response, border security and airport safety.
She argued that the shutdown was politically motivated, claiming Democrats were “picking a fight” with Donald Trump rather than prioritising the welfare of federal employees.
According to her, the impasse puts essential services and national security operations under unnecessary strain.
The shutdown has heightened tensions in Washington, with both parties trading blame over funding disagreements.
