The Senate has initiated moves to amend the 1999 Constitution to increase the Federal Government’s share of revenue from the Federation Account.

Lawmakers argue that the current allocation no longer reflects the scale of responsibilities handled by the centre.

The proposal was introduced through a bill sponsored by Senator Sunday Karimi (APC, Kogi West), which passed first reading at plenary on Tuesday.

It comes amid renewed debate over fiscal federalism and public criticism of state-level spending outcomes.

Under the existing formula, the Federal Government receives 52.68 per cent of federation revenue, states get 26.72 per cent, while local governments share 20.60 per cent.

Despite this, the Senate is seeking a further upward review of the federal share.

Karimi said funding constraints have worsened infrastructure decay and insecurity nationwide.

He argued that increasing federal allocations would strengthen capacity to tackle banditry, terrorism and the maintenance of federal roads.
