Bafana Bafana Reach Last 16
South Africa secured a historic 1-0 victory over South Korea on Wednesday to reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time.
The result completed a remarkable turnaround for Bafana Bafana. After losing 2-0 to Mexico in their opening match, many fans believed their tournament was over.
However, the team responded with a draw against the Czech Republic. As a result, the match against South Korea became a direct battle for second place in Group A.
South Korea Begin on the Front Foot
Before kickoff, South Korea coach Hong Myung-bo made a surprising decision by leaving captain Son Heung-min on the bench.
The Asian side started brightly and created the first chances. Kim Min-jae nearly scored with a powerful header, but Aubrey Modiba cleared the ball off the line.
Soon after, Lee Kang-in fired a shot narrowly wide.
Meanwhile, South Africa gradually settled into the game. The players attacked with confidence and looked dangerous going forward.
Missed Chances Before the Break
South Africa came close to taking the lead in the 30th minute.
After goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu saved Thalente Mbatha’s effort, the ball fell to Evidence Makgopa inside the penalty area. Unfortunately for South Africa, the striker shot straight at the goalkeeper.
As the first half continued, both teams searched for an opening. Nevertheless, neither side could find the breakthrough before halftime.
Maseko Delivers the Winner
At the start of the second half, Hong introduced Son Heung-min along with two other substitutes.
Soon afterward, both teams created opportunities. Maseko missed a chance for South Africa, while Oh Hyeon-gyu tested goalkeeper Ronwen Williams at the other end.
At the same time, news arrived that Mexico were leading the Czech Republic. Consequently, the pressure increased on both teams.
South Africa finally made their breakthrough in the 63rd minute. Tshepang Moremi sent a cross into the box, and Maseko calmly finished at the near post.
The goal gave Bafana Bafana the advantage they needed.
South Africa Hold Firm
Following the goal, South Korea pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Despite their efforts, South Africa defended strongly in the closing stages.
In the end, Bafana Bafana secured a famous victory and advanced to the last 16.
South Africa will now face Canada in Los Angeles on June 28. Meanwhile, Mexico finished top of Group A after winning all three matches and collecting nine points.
