Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has congratulated Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, on her election as the 33rd President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
The governor described her victory as a major milestone for Nigeria’s legal profession, said becoming only the second female NBA president shows her years of hard work, skill, and dedication.
In a statement released on Monday, Sanwo-Olu praised Badejo-Okusanya for her strong record in the legal profession, he said she has earned respect through excellence, honesty, and a firm commitment to the rule of law.
Her election, he noted, sends a powerful message to young women across Lagos and Nigeria, it proves that commitment and determination can lead to top leadership positions.Sanwo-Olu also expressed confidence in her ability to lead the association.
Speaking on behalf of the Lagos State Government and its people, the governor wished Badejo-Okusanya a successful and rewarding tenure. He said her leadership would help move the legal profession forward and encourage greater public trust in the justice system.Badejo-Okusanya won the NBA’s 2026 national officers’ election with 12,317 votes, representing 47.18 percent of the total votes cast.
Her closest challenger, Lateef Akangbe, SAN, secured 7,934 votes, while Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN, received 5,855 votes.She will serve a two-year term from 2026 to 2028. Badejo-Okusanya succeeds outgoing NBA President Afam Osigwe.
Her victory is historic because she becomes only the second woman to lead the NBA. Priscilla Kuye was the first female president and served from 1991 to 1992. Many legal professionals believe this achievement marks another important step for gender inclusion and stronger leadership within Nigeria’s legal community.
