The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has expressed concern over the manner in which the trial of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, is being handled, alleging that there are attempts to prevent him from being granted bail.

Sanusi made the remarks during an interaction with journalists, where he called for fairness and adherence to the rule of law in the conduct of legal proceedings, regardless of an individual’s status or political affiliation.

The Emir said the El-Rufai case serves as an example of the need to protect the rights of defendants and ensure that the justice system operates based on principles of fairness and impartiality.

He stressed that the Nigerian Constitution and existing laws guarantee the rights of accused persons, including the opportunity to apply for bail where legal conditions are met.

According to him, authorities must avoid actions that could create the perception that the judicial process is being used to achieve a different objective.

Sanusi further urged respect for the rule of law, noting that public confidence in the justice system depends on the fair and transparent handling of court cases.

The Emir’s comments come amid ongoing debates over the handling of high-profile cases involving prominent political figures in the country.
