A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and prominent social critic, Aisha Yesufu, has claimed that President Bola Tinubu is already losing political ground ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during a political discussion, Yesufu argued that the President’s alleged efforts to rally governors around him were aimed at creating what she described as an “illusion of power.”
According to her, political influence built solely on the backing of governors does not necessarily translate into electoral victory.
“He has already lost; that’s why he is looking for governors that he’d put together to have an illusion of power,” Yesufu said.

The activist further cited the experience of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), noting that the party once controlled more than 20 state governors but still lost a presidential election.
“Once upon a time, I think PDP had 20-something governors; it didn’t stop them from losing the election when it was time for them to lose,” she added.
Her comments come amid growing political realignments and early permutations among parties and political actors ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
Analysts say debates about incumbency advantage, party strength, and the influence of governors are already shaping discussions around the future of Nigeria’s political landscape as the next electoral cycle approaches.
