Human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has sharply condemned plans to grant amnesty to terrorists and bandits in Nigeria.

Adeyanju argued that forgiving terrorists “violates the Constitution” and is beyond the authority of state powers, warning that it undermines justice and security.

He said negotiating, forgiving, or appeasing armed groups amounts to indirect financing of terrorism and sends the wrong signal about taking up arms against the state.

According to Adeyanju, terrorists and bandits are criminals who should be arrested, prosecuted and jailed, not granted concessions or welcomed by government officials.

He warned that granting amnesty erodes the rule of law, potentially encouraging more people to take up arms knowing they might be pardoned later.

Adeyanju urged the government to prioritize law enforcement, prosecution and accountability to restore security and protect citizens.
