President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to amend existing judicial laws to expand the number of Justices in both the Court of Appeal and the Federal High Court.
The request was contained in separate letters read by Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, during plenary on Tuesday, following the Senate’s resumption from its Christmas and New Year recess.
According to the President, the proposed amendment to the Court of Appeal Act seeks to increase the number of Justices from 70 to 110, while the amendment to the Federal High Court Act aims to raise the number of judges from 70 to 90.
President Tinubu explained that the proposed increase is necessary to address the growing workload in the judiciary, reduce case backlogs, and enhance the speed and efficiency of justice delivery across the country.
In addition, the President forwarded a request to the Senate for the confirmation of Justice Oyewole Joseph Kayode as a Justice of the Supreme Court.
He also transmitted a bill seeking amendments to 24 health sector-related legislations, aimed at strengthening healthcare service delivery and regulatory frameworks in the country.
