The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has held separate meetings with the two factions of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at its headquarters in Abuja, in a bid to resolve the party’s lingering leadership crisis.

The meetings, held on Thursday, were part of INEC’s intervention efforts ahead of key electoral activities, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Councils elections, as well as the Ekiti and Osun off-cycle governorship polls.

Speaking during the engagement, INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, said the Commission has a responsibility, within its constitutional mandate, to address internal disputes within political parties, especially when such issues could affect the conduct of elections.

The Kabiru Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) was accompanied by the Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara, and former Niger State Governor, Dr Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, among others.

The Abdulrahman Mohammed-led National Working Committee also attended the meeting, accompanied by Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Captain Umar Bature, and other party stakeholders.

INEC urged both factions to prioritise unity and internal reconciliation in order to ensure the party’s effective participation in upcoming elections.
