The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the World Bank have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s emergency preparedness and response capacity through deeper collaboration and technical support.

A World Bank delegation visited NEMA Headquarters in Abuja on Monday to review progress on the Emergency Preparedness and Response (EP&R) Programme and explore further cooperation under the Ready-to-Respond (R2R) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) frameworks.

Speaking during the session, Dr. Onimode Abdullahi Bandele, NEMA’s Director of Planning, Research and Forecasting, who represented the Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, underscored the importance of sustained partnerships in strengthening national disaster management systems.

He reiterated NEMA’s commitment to building stronger early-warning systems, improving response coordination, and enhancing institutional readiness at both national and state levels in line with global best practices.

Dr. Bandele added that ongoing collaboration with development partners like the World Bank has been instrumental in scaling Nigeria’s capacity in emergency planning, preparedness, and disaster-risk financing, noting that insights from the joint EP&R assessment have identified key areas for improvement.

The World Bank team commended NEMA’s leadership and reaffirmed the institution’s readiness to continue providing technical and operational support toward advancing disaster preparedness and response frameworks across the country.

Both organizations agreed to sustain engagement, implement agreed action points, and work together to strengthen Nigeria’s resilience to emerging risks and hazards.
