Nigeria’s ambition to host the 2034 Commonwealth Games has entered a new phase as Commonwealth Sport officials review the country’s previous 2030 bid.
The review took place on September 30, 2026, at the National Sports Commission headquarters in Abuja. NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade, alongside Nigeria Olympic Committee President Habu Gumel, hosted Commonwealth Sport President Donald Rukare and Director of Sport Darren Hall.
The officials examined Nigeria’s 2030 proposal and discussed how the country can build on it to present a stronger bid for 2034.
Commonwealth Sport highlighted several strengths in Nigeria’s proposal, including strong government backing, existing sporting infrastructure in Abuja and Lagos, ambitious legacy plans, previous experience hosting major sporting events and a proposed co-hosting model.
Nigeria’s ongoing investment in sports infrastructure and its broader plan to reposition the sector also featured in the discussions.
However, the review identified areas that require further development. These include venue alignment, Games scheduling, budgeting and the selection of optional sports.
Commonwealth Sport has expressed its intention to take the 2034 Games to Africa, with Nigeria positioning its previous 2030 bid as the foundation for its new proposal.
The latest engagement forms part of Nigeria’s continuing efforts to strengthen its hosting proposition and demonstrate its capacity to stage one of the Commonwealth’s biggest sporting events.
