MGM+ has released the first trailer for its upcoming four part adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel, A Tale of Two Cities, bringing the famous story of love, sacrifice and revolution to the screen once again.
The series stars Kit Harington as Sydney Carton, the troubled and deeply conflicted lawyer whose life becomes connected to Charles Darnay and Lucie Manette in a complicated love triangle.
Set during the French Revolution, the drama follows its characters as their personal lives collide with a society experiencing violence, political unrest and major social change.
Harington has described the story as feeling surprisingly modern, particularly because of the intense human drama unfolding against a world that is rapidly falling apart.
French actor François Civil plays Charles Darnay, while Mirren Mack takes on the role of Lucie Manette, the woman at the centre of the emotional conflict between the two men.
The story is known for its themes of redemption and self-sacrifice, with Sydney Carton facing one of the most memorable acts of sacrifice in classic literature.
The new adaptation aims to bring those themes to a contemporary television audience while retaining the dramatic setting and emotional weight of Dickens’ original work.
The four part series will premiere on MGM+ on September 6 and will also air on the BBC in the UK.
With its combination of romance, political upheaval and personal sacrifice, the adaptation arrives at a time when Dickens’ themes of inequality, instability and a society undergoing major change continue to feel relevant.
For Harington, the role also offers a chance to step into one of literature’s most complicated characters and introduce Sydney Carton to a new generation of viewers.
