Messi Breaks World Cup Scoring Record as Argentina Beat Austria 2-0

Lionel Messi scored twice as Argentina defeated Austria 2-0 on Monday to reach the World Cup last 32.

The Argentina captain became the highest scorer in World Cup history. His two goals took his tournament total to 17.

The victory also gave the defending champions six points from two matches.

Messi Opens the Scoring

Messi scored the first goal late in the first half in Texas. Argentina built the move with several quick passes before the captain finished with his left foot.

The goal added to the hat-trick he scored in Argentina’s opening match. It also moved him ahead as the leading scorer in World Cup history.

Argentina controlled possession for long periods, but Austria remained difficult to break down.

Missed Penalty Fails to Stop Messi

Messi had the chance to score earlier in the game. However, he missed a first-half penalty, surprising the 70,649 fans inside the stadium.

Despite the miss, the 38-year-old remained dangerous throughout the match. His movement and passing caused problems for the Austrian defense.

Thousands of Argentina supporters cheered him throughout the game.

Late Goal Seals Victory

Messi scored his second goal deep into stoppage time. The ball bounced around the penalty area before he reacted quickly.

He beat several defenders and calmly finished to secure the victory.

The goal ended Austria’s hopes and sent Argentina into the knockout stage.

Messi and Alvarez React

After the match, Messi expressed his delight with the result.

“Very happy for the victory. It was very important and very difficult. It gives us peace of mind for what is to come,” he said.

Argentina forward Julian Alvarez also praised his captain.

“There is not much to say about Leo. He has been the best in the world for more than 20 years. He is the best in history,” Alvarez said.

He added that the match was close and intense, but the team was pleased to collect six points.

Argentina Move Into Last 32

Argentina’s second straight win puts them into the knockout rounds. The reigning champions will now turn their attention to the next stage as they continue their title defense.

With Messi in record-breaking form, Argentina remain among the favorites to win the tournament.
