DR Congo Hold Portugal to Earn Historic First World Cup Point
The Democratic Republic of Congo claimed their first-ever FIFA World Cup point after battling to a 1-1 draw against Portugal on Wednesday.
The Leopards showed resilience and determination as they came from behind to deny Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo victory in their opening tournament fixture.
Early Portuguese Pressure Pays Off
Portugal started strongly and took the lead after just six minutes. Midfielder João Neves headed home to give the European giants an early advantage.
The Portuguese dominated possession throughout the first half, controlling nearly 80 percent of the ball. DR Congo were forced to defend deep and stay compact as Portugal pushed for a second goal.
Despite spending long periods without possession, the Congolese side remained organized. Forwards Yoane Wissa and Cédric Bakambu worked tirelessly to pressure Portugal’s defense whenever opportunities arose.
Wissa Strikes Back
The Leopards refused to be discouraged by the early setback. Their determination paid off when Yoane Wissa produced a fine finish to level the score.
The equaliser sparked celebrations among the Congolese supporters and rewarded a disciplined performance from Sébastien Desabre’s team.
Although Portugal continued to create pressure, DR Congo stood firm and protected their point until the final whistle.
A Historic Moment for Congolese Football
The result marks a significant milestone for Congolese football. It ends a long wait for a positive World Cup result following the country’s only previous appearance in 1974, when they competed as Zaire.
For more than five decades, that difficult campaign in West Germany has cast a shadow over the nation’s football history.
Now, the current generation has written a new chapter. By holding one of the tournament favorites, DR Congo have secured their first-ever World Cup point and announced themselves on the global stage.
