The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of bandits, describing the incident as a tragic loss to the state and Nigeria.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr Nasiru Mu’azu, who said the former military officer died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while being held captive.
Mu’azu said the death occurred despite sustained efforts by the Katsina State Government and security agencies to secure Abubakar’s safe release.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the death of retired Maj.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar while in bandits’ captivity,” the commissioner stated, adding that the development represented a major loss to his family, Katsina State, and the country.
The retired general, who previously served as Director of Defence Information, was abducted alongside his wife by suspected bandits in Katsina State.
The Katsina Government expressed condolences to the family of the deceased, describing the incident as a reminder of the urgent need for stronger action against banditry and other security threats affecting communities across the state.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda said the tragedy underscored the importance of collective efforts by government, security agencies, and citizens to tackle criminal activities and restore peace.
The government also reaffirmed its commitment to working with federal authorities and security forces to ensure that those responsible for the abduction are brought to justice.
Abubakar’s death adds to growing concerns over the security situation in parts of northern Nigeria, where kidnapping and bandit attacks have continued to threaten lives and property.
