Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has urged political aspirants in the state to prioritise unity, patience, and legacy as political activities intensify ahead of future elections.
Bello spoke in Lokoja while hosting members of the Kogi State House of Assembly, according to a statement from his media office.
The visit comes as consultations and alignments increase across the state following the inauguration of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, Bello’s successor and political ally who won the 2023 governorship election.
Bello, who governed Kogi from 2016 to 2024, still commands strong influence within the state and the ruling All Progressives Congress.
He congratulated aspirants who purchased expression of interest and nomination forms and reminded them that political power remains temporary and also urged them to focus on the legacy they will leave and the impact they will make on the people.
Bello said many people possess the capacity to lead but political realities require compromise and patience, warned aspirants against paying for endorsement and directed anyone who made such payments to demand a refund.
He urged the aspirants to return to their constituencies and reconcile with stakeholders, stressing that unity, inclusiveness, and grassroots engagement will shape electoral success.
Bello expressed confidence in their chances and encouraged them to sustain success through service and commitment. He added that he wants people to remember him as a promise keeper who stands by his word except in situations beyond his control.
The meeting reflects Bello’s continued involvement in Kogi politics as preparations for future contests gradually take shape.
