The Centre for Gender Studies at Gombe State University has formally launched its Sexual Harassment Policy Book, reinforcing the institution’s zero-tolerance stance on gender-based violence.
The event, held at the University mph, drew commendations from traditional rulers, legal practitioners, security agencies, and civil society organisations, reflecting broad stakeholder support for the initiative.
Chairman of the occasion and former Attorney General of Gombe State, Zubair Muhammad Umar, praised the university leadership for establishing the Centre for Gender Studies. He described the policy as timely, noting the prevalence of sexual harassment across society, and called for stronger legal and institutional mechanisms to address the issue.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sani Ahmed Yauta, who was represented by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Danladi Umar Muhammed, reiterated the university’s commitment to tackling gender-based violence. He said the institution would provide full support for the policy’s effective implementation and that any breach would not be tolerated.
Also speaking, the Senior District Head of Gombe State, Ibrahim Bappah, urged stakeholders to adopt inclusive approaches to gender issues, stressing the need to harness the potential of all members of society regardless of gender.
Representatives delivered goodwill messages from the Ministry of Justice, National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the National Orientation Agency (NOA), among others. They commended the university and the Centre for what they described as a significant step toward safeguarding rights within academic institutions.
In her vote of thanks, the Director of the Centre for Gender Studies, Aisha Abubakar Kumo, stressed that the launch represents a concrete commitment rather than a symbolic gesture. She noted that the Centre would focus on implementation, monitoring, and sustained advocacy to ensure a safe academic environment.
The Sexual Harassment Policy Book is expected to serve as a comprehensive guide for staff and students, outlining prevention strategies, reporting channels, and disciplinary procedures aimed at protecting members of the university community.
