FG files 13-count charge against alleged coup plotters

The Federal Government has filed a 13-count charge before the Federal High Court in Abuja against six individuals, including retired military officers and a serving police inspector, over their alleged involvement in a plot to destabilise Nigeria and commit acts of terrorism.

The defendants include a retired Major General, a retired Naval Captain, Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, and three others. They are accused of offences ranging from treason and conspiracy to commit terrorism, alleged failure to report a planned treasonable act, and involvement in activities said to threaten national security. According to the charge, they allegedly conspired in 2025 to wage war against the state and undermine the authority of the President.

The Federal Government further alleged that some of the accused participated in meetings linked to the plot and provided support for activities considered capable of destabilising the country’s constitutional order. They were also accused of withholding critical intelligence that could have helped prevent the alleged offences. connected to terrorism financing, with some defendants accused of handling millions of naira suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities. The case was filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and signed by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN).

The defendants are expected to be arraigned before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday, as the case marks a major step in ongoing investigations into alleged threats against Nigeria’s democratic government.
