Nigeria’s Minister of Transportation, Sa’idu Ahmed Alkali, has resigned to pursue his political ambition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He stepped down in line with the March 31 deadline for public office holders seeking elective positions.

Alkali visited the State House in Abuja, where he held a closed-door meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Officials later confirmed that the meeting was linked to his decision to resign.

Sources say the former minister is preparing to contest the Gombe State governorship in the next election cycle.

Alkali joins a growing list of cabinet members who have left office to pursue political ambitions. They include former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, and former Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Yusuf Tanko Sununu.

In a related development, President Tinubu received former Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, at the Presidential Villa. The visit marked Badaru’s first official meeting with the President since his resignation.

Officials did not disclose details of the meeting. However, sources say the discussion focused on the political situation in Jigawa State and Badaru’s next move.

The talks also addressed speculation about his possible exit from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Badaru, a former two-term governor of Jigawa State, resigned on December 1, 2025. He had served as minister since August 21, 2023.

President Tinubu also met with the immediate past APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje. The meeting signals ongoing high-level consultations within the ruling party ahead of the 2027 elections.
