Tension erupted at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport when security operatives tried to detain former Kaduna governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai upon his return from Cairo, Egypt.
Upon landing, operatives approached El-Rufai as he disembarked, seeking to take him into custody. He refused to go with them without a formal written invitation or summons.
During the standoff, the security agents allegedly seized El-Rufai’s international passport from one of his aides a move his team described as shocking and unlawful.
El-Rufai reportedly told security officials to issue an official invitation if they wanted him, stressing he wouldn’t go with them without due process.
This incident comes just after El-Rufai warned that he could be arrested on his return, alleging political pressure and intimidation from authorities following his criticism of the ruling party.
As of now, security agencies have not issued an official statement on the attempted arrest or passport seizure.
