Sudanese refugees fleeing the war in their country are arriving in eastern Chad with severe injuries, many caused by drone attacks.

Medical workers say the attacks have intensified as fighting escalates between rival forces.

At Tine hospital near the Sudan–Chad border, doctors treated 33-year-old Mahamat Hamid Abakar, who suffered a head injury from a drone strike in Sudan’s Um Baru area.

Three passengers travelling with him were killed in the explosion.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been gripped by conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, killing tens of thousands and displacing more than 13 million people, according to the United Nations.

Health workers say more than 1,000 wounded refugees have been treated since late last year.

Aid agencies warn of worsening physical and mental health conditions in camps without urgent international support.
