From Local Radio to RFI Hausa, Journalist Shares Journey

A 20-year-old journalist, Hauwa Halliru Gwangwazo, has celebrated a major milestone after graduating with a degree in Mass Communication while building a successful career in the media industry.

Sharing her journey, Gwangwazo revealed that she gained admission into the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) at the age of 16 shortly after completing secondary school.

According to her, her father, a veteran journalist, encouraged her to combine academic studies with practical journalism experience by joining a media organisation.

“Four years ago, right after I graduated from secondary school at 16, I gained admission to study Mass Communication at NOUN. My father advised me to start going to Premier Radio Kano to learn the practical side of journalism,” she said.

Gwangwazo explained that the distance-learning structure of NOUN allowed her to pursue her studies while working in the media.

“Since NOUN is distance learning — we only go in for exams, no lectures — he wanted me to gain real experience at the same time. That’s how I started my B.Sc and my journalism career at the same time,” she said.

Her professional journey began at Premier Radio 102.7 FM before she moved to Hikima Radio and TV. She currently works with Radio France Internationale (RFI) Hausa as an international multimedia journalist.

Reflecting on the challenges of balancing education and work, Gwangwazo said determination, family support and faith helped her succeed.

“It wasn’t easy balancing school and work, but with Allah, plus the support of my parents and siblings, nothing is impossible. Today, I can proudly say that at just 20 years old, I have a degree in Mass Communication and I’m working as an international multimedia journalist. And this is only the beginning,” she stated.

She expressed gratitude to her parents, family members, friends, colleagues and supporters who contributed to her success.

Gwangwazo also paid special tribute to Malam Abba Dabo, the owner of Premier Radio Kano, for believing in her and providing opportunities that helped shape her career.

“He believed in me from day one, not only gave me the opportunity to work with his company, but also supported and encouraged me every step of the way,” she added.

Her achievement has been described as an inspiring example of how young Nigerians can combine education with practical experience to build successful careers at an early age. :::
