Aliko Dangote has warned that artificial intelligence (AI) could disrupt engineering jobs. He is the President of the Dangote Group, and he spoke at an industry forum on innovation and industrial development.

During his address, he said AI is already changing how engineers work. In particular, he pointed to design, planning, and industrial operations as areas experiencing rapid transformation.

As a result, he explained that machines now handle tasks that once required large engineering teams. Consequently, this shift could reduce some traditional job roles in the sector.

However, Dangote stressed that the main issue is not AI itself. Instead, he said the real challenge lies in how quickly professionals adapt to the technology.

In response to this shift, he called on governments, universities, and industry leaders to act without delay. He urged them to update engineering education systems. Additionally, he recommended the inclusion of artificial intelligence, robotics, and data science in training programmes.

Furthermore, he encouraged increased investment in research and innovation hubs. He also called for continuous training to help engineers and technical workers stay relevant.

At the same time, he warned that Africa risks falling behind if it fails to adjust to new technologies. Therefore, he emphasized the need for urgent action across all sectors.

Importantly, he said AI should support human work rather than replace it. In his view, the technology can improve productivity and efficiency when properly used.

Ultimately, he noted that countries that adopt AI effectively will grow faster. In addition, he said they will gain stronger industrial competitiveness in the global economy.

Overall, his warning reflects growing global concerns about AI and employment. Specifically, sectors such as engineering, manufacturing, and finance are expected to experience major changes
